Considered on the twentieth century’s greatest innovators, Paul Klee is a benchmark artist in Expressionism, Cubism and Surrealism. Of German-Swiss heritage, Paul Klee was both a painter and active artist as well as a respected Art Historian, critic and writer on the arts. His book, the Paul Klee Notebooks – a treatise on colour and design theory – is considered one of the most important pieces of writing on the arts.
Described by the Tate as ‘witty, inventive and magical’ Klee’s paintings defy easy taxonomy, and so housing them together as a single artist collection could be considered challenging, however this fantastic retrospective of his work maintains a pleasingly consistent tone.
Beginning with his early work during the First World War, when his paintings were concerned mainly with abstractionism and colour theory, progressing through to the decade Klee spent teaching and working at the Bauhaus, the Tate Modern have curated a decade spanning collection of his works.
