London Hot Spot: The Shard
Looking for an excuse to visit the bright lights of London? Want a classically London trip, with all the tourist trappings, but perhaps with a bit of a twist? Why not visit an emerging tourist attraction on the London skyline, on the way to being iconic, but still not your usual tourist trap (plus, with the added bonus of offering you ‘I did it before you did’ cache)?
An 87 storey skyscraper that began development in 2009 and was completed just last year – The Shard is a controversial and relatively new fixture on the London skyline, and while no trip to London is complete without picking it out in the distance, did you know you can visit this stunning new building?!
Visitors are catching on to the fact that you can visit The Shard, a currently containing offices and even a hotel, but most exciting of all “the view from The Shard”. Visitors can now ascend Renzo Piano’s controversial build to the 68th to 72nd floors, to see the four-storey observatory deck and take in some of the finest views of London.
Spanning a number of The Shard’s floors are three haute cuisine restaurants, offering some of the finest food in London, alongside stunning views. Restaurants Oblix, Huton and Aqua Shard offer contemporary British cuisine, Asian cuisine and a comfortable casual grill. Whether you want to get glammed up and splash out on a no-expenses-spared dining experience or go for something more laidback, the restaurants need to be sampled to be believed.
