The different seasons are marked in their respective ways; for Autumn the tree lights up autumn leaves shapes, for winter, it lights up with a multitude of dazzling snowflakes. It is illuminated by 3.3 million lightbulbs! Weighing a staggering 542 tonnes – the tree was constructed and gifted to the city by Brazil’s largest insurance company.
The tree will be lit until the 6th January, during scores of tourists eager to come see this spectacular sight for themselves. Rio de Janeiro is fast becoming a winter break of choice; with many tourists choosing the city for their Christmas and New Year breaks. More than a million people are expected to come see the floating Christmas tree – which is just one part of a programme of events and installations throughout the city, for the festive season, culminating in New Year’s Eve on Copacabana beach!
