South Korean cuisines and best places to eat
The cuisine is largely based upon rice, vegetables and meats with many side dishes or what is known as banchan. Kimchi is probably the most famous side dish which is sliced cabbage fermented with red chilli sauce and anchovy paste and is a popular addition to most meals. Food is a major part of Korean life so presentation is important and the dishes are considered very different from Chinese and Japanese food.
The food is known to be quite spicy, full of flavour and very healthy. A tasty dish is Japchae stir-fried noodles, which are usually made from sweet potato starch noodles with lightly cooked vegetables. Another great dish is Bulgogi, which is beef made on a Korean barbeque and is very thinly sliced and marinated in a sauce made from pear juice, garlic and soy sauce. Why not also try Soondubu Jiggae which is a Korean stew with a small amount of beef, hot pepper flakes and also tofu.
There are some amazing restaurants in the capital city of Seoul including To Sok Chon which is popular with many tourists. The restaurant is best known for samgyetang, which is a spring chicken stuffed with chestnuts, garlic and ginseng, which is slow-cooked for hours. A restaurant in the city known for its simplicity is Gae Hwa Oak. It takes the minimalist approach and the food is very comforting with dishes such as bossam (pork shoulder) and bugogi (marinated grilled beef).
In the city of Busan head to the Food Hall at Shinsegae Department Store which is so much more than just a food court. It has fabulous dishes such as sizzling Mongolian grill, fresh sushi and sweet and savoury crepes.
South Korea has so much to offer in terms of different dishes in each area and it is a delight for food-lovers to sample a slice of what the country has to offer.
