Shopping in Rome for chic fashions, vintage clothes, fresh food and gifts
Rome is full of designer boutiques, second hand stores, markets and other options. You won’t find too many bargains in the Eternal City, but the quality of goods on offer and of course the setting make browsing in Rome a good way to pass a few hours.
Boutiques: Italy is one of the world’s most important countries for fashion and you’ll find plenty of places to buy Italian designs in the capital city. For clothes, shoes, accessories and jewellery, one of the best areas of Rome is around the Piazza di Spagna and Via Borgognona. There you’ll find the likes of Prada, Valentino, Gucci, Fendi, Missoni and Armani.
Markets: Rome’s oldest market, at Campo Dei Fiori is a great place to go for fresh produce, including fish, fruit and vegetables, plus spices, kitchen utensils, tablecloths and toys. Porta Portese market, in the Trastevere quarter, is one of the city’s main flea markets. Smaller flea markets include the Mercantino dei Partigiani, in the Piazza dei Partigiani, and an underground flea market held in a multi-storey parking lot between the Piazza del Popolo and the Via Veneto.
Vintage stores: Whether you’re looking for ‘60s miniskirts, ‘30s suits or ‘80s jeans, Rome has plenty of places to buy vintage clothes. Via del Governo Vecchio is a good place to look, with several vintage stores located there.
Souvenirs: Rome is full of souvenir stores. One of the many option for buying gifts is the Vatican City, the gift shops there offer all kinds of items including jewellery, Vatican medals, holy communion gifts, baptism gifts, Vatican coins, art, crucifixes, bibles, candles, confirmation gifts and Pope memorabilia. If you buy a rosary, you can even have it blessed by a priest from St Peter’s.
